Laneway House Budget Breakdown Dwell Feature
Earlier this year, my partner and I had the chance to chat *very* candidly with Dwell about the process and build of our laneway house for their Budget Breakdown series. From learning to install siding via YouTube down to the custom grout colour that our incredibly patient contractors mixed for us (thank you!), we spill the lessons we took away from the experience.
In Summary: Household chore motivation, a peek into my IG saved folder, and a tiny home suburb
Anyone else feel like they used up an exorbitant amount of energy just surviving the first month of this year?
S A M E. This month I found inspiration in the strangest of places, so here’s a roundup of some really beautiful stuff on the internet that got me through the beginning of 2021.
Home Tour: Garage to Laneway House Conversion
At the start of 2019, my partner and I began the process of converting our detached garage into a two-storey laneway house. Here’s how it turned out.
My Favourite Free Fonts for Designers (V3)
Honestly, this photo has nothing to do with fonts but I really miss touching people. Maybe this is my way of touching you with the gift of beautiful type for your next project?
In Summary: What I read, cooked and listened to this December
“Young Millennials, driven to distraction and depression by nonstop, constantly comparative online benchmarking, can’t unglue from phones-as-performance-measuring-devices. Who can blame them?”
Plus, a very easy salad and some songs that I forgot were really, really good and listened to a lot.
My Favourite Free Fonts for Designers (V2)
No intro needed, we know why you’re here. The past month has been busy with branding projects, so I spent a ton of time sourcing type! This time around, I’ve curated a list of serif, sans serif and display t for your designing pleasure. I hope these typefaces help you with your next project.
My Favourite Free Fonts for Designers (V1)
I promise you that I have spent approximately one billion hours (or so it feels) sourcing free typefaces for clients who are looking to stay within a budget, but of course, still want a high quality stand-out brand. If you’re a designer (or just working on a personal project!) hope you find this useful, and that it saves you a few hours of internet digging.
Late Summer Playlist: Ladies Ladies Ladies
Okay, so this is partly a dishonest piece of “new” content, but there is way too much incredible music by womxn artists and fronted bands that I did a massive update to this classic* playlist. Cheers, you’re welcome in advance, because this is truly a treat for the ears (and lucky for you, it’s like four hours long).
OOO: Blue Sky Center, New Cuyama California
Blue Sky Center is many things – an accommodation, private event space, community hub, but overall a “place based nonprofit organization” that aims to breathe new life into the communities of the Cuyama Valley. Through partnerships with businesses and other local organizations, Blue Sky’s mission is to revitalize New Cuyama and its surrounding areas through creative place-making, entrepreneurship and tourism.
Before + After: Creating a Custom Boho Dining Nook
Before signing on the dotted line when we bought our condo, I had an embarrassing number of Pinterest boards that coincided with every room. Since my partner and I purchased the unit on assignment (meaning we bought it from someone who had purchased it previously from the builder during the pre-construction phase) we had no choice when it came to the layout – but we were determined to make what we had work for our lifestyle.
